IRIS Setup Guide

Step-by-step instructions for instructors to set up IRIS for your class

Quick Start:

  1. Open the demo document above
  2. Install the IRIS add-on (see Step 1 below)
  3. Click Extensions → IRIS - AI Writing Tutor → Open Sidebar
  4. Explore the pre-generated feedback and try replying to comments!

Students: Install the IRIS Add-on

Students need to install the IRIS add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace.

For Students:

  1. Click the marketplace link below or Open Google Docs and go to Extensions → Add-ons → Get add-ons
  2. Search for "IRIS - AI Writing Tutor"
  3. Click Install and authorize the add-on
  4. The add-on is now available in your Google Docs Extensions menu

Instructors: Create a Class in IRIS Admin Console

Log in to the IRIS Admin Portal and create a class for your students.

  1. Go to www.iris-tutor.com and sign in with Google
  2. Click Create Class on your dashboard
  3. Enter your class name and description
  4. Click Create to save your class

Add Students to Your Class

Add your students to the class. You can add them individually or import via CSV.

  1. Open your class from the dashboard
  2. Click Add Student or Import Students
  3. Enter student names and email addresses (must match the Google account they will use to install the add-on)
  4. Optionally set feedback preferences (Directive or Facilitative)
  5. Click Save to add students

Create an Assignment

Create an assignment and link it to student documents.

  1. In your class, click Create Assignment
  2. Enter the assignment name and description
  3. Click Create to save the assignment

Add Assignment Template and Other Context Files

Connect a template, lecture notes, rubric, and other files to an assignment to increase IRIS feedback quality.

  1. Create a Google Doc template file for your students' writing assignment
  2. Copy the URL for the template file and paste it in the Assignment Template field
  3. Click the edit button on the assignment in the IRIS admin console to open the edit assignment view
  4. Drag and drop any other context files you'd like IRIS to be aware of when generating feedback
  5. Save the assignment

Generate Student Document Copies

Create individual copies of the assignment template for each student in your class.

  1. In the assignment view, find the Assignment Template field
  2. Next to the template field, click the Generate Copies button
  3. IRIS will create a copy of the template for each student in your class
  4. Each student will have their own editable document linked to the assignment
  5. Wait for the copy generation to complete (this may take a moment)

Generate AI Feedback

Once student document copies are generated, generate AI-powered feedback for your students.

  1. In the assignment view, verify a copy of the assignment doc is linked to each student
  2. In the Generated Student Documents section, click Generate Feedback button
  3. IRIS will analyze each document and create personalized feedback
  4. Wait for the feedback generation to complete (this may take a few minutes)
  5. Next to the Iris Interaction Lock button, click Unlock to allow students to interact with IRIS
  6. Students can now open their documents and see IRIS feedback in the sidebar

Feedback Generation Complete!

Students can now open their Google Docs, click Extensions → IRIS → Open Sidebar to see their personalized AI feedback.

Quick Tips

For Instructors

  • • Set feedback type (Directive/Facilitative) per student
  • • You can regenerate feedback if needed
  • • Lock/unlock IRIS interactions per assignment
  • • View feedback analytics in the dashboard

For Students

  • • Install the add-on once, use it for all assignments
  • • Reply to IRIS comments to get more guidance
  • • Use the sidebar to navigate between feedback
  • • Refresh comments to see new feedback
