Terms of Service for IRIS Add-On

Last Updated: October 22, 2025

1. Introduction

Welcome to IRIS! This add-on is a tool for educational purposes, designed to assist users in learning and improving their writing. It is provided "as is" and is not a commercial product. By using this add-on, you agree to these terms.

2. Permissions and Data Usage

To function, IRIS requires access to your Google Account and your Google Docs. The permissions requested are essential for the add-on's features and are used as follows:

  • View your email address: Used to identify you as a user and to display your name when you interact with the add-on.
  • View your Google Docs documents: Required to read the content of the documents you open and actively use with IRIS. This allows the add-on to provide features like AI suggestions, comment processing, and feedback generation based on your text.
  • View and manage files in your Google Drive: Used to access the document you are using. The script only accesses the specific files you have granted it access to. It does not access other files in your Drive.
  • Connect to an external service: IRIS connects to its backend API at https://iris-tutor.com. The content of your document and your chat messages may be sent to this external service for processing.
  • Display and run third-party web content in prompts and sidebars: This permission is needed to show the user interface of the add-on within Google Docs.

3. How Your Data is Handled

Your privacy is important. Here is how your data is handled by IRIS:

  • Service Account: The add-on may ask you to share your document with a service account (iris-ai-tutor@iris-466123.iam.gserviceaccount.com). This is required so the add-on can add comments and replies on your behalf, providing you with AI-generated feedback directly within your document.
  • Comments and Replies: The script reads comments and replies in your document to provide context for AI responses and to update comment anchors when the document is edited.

4. No Guarantees or Warranties

IRIS is provided for educational purposes only. The add-on and its AI-generated content may contain errors, inaccuracies, or incomplete information. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information or output. You are responsible for independently verifying any information provided by the add-on.

5. Limitation of Liability

The creator of IRIS is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages resulting from the use or inability to use the add-on. You agree to use this tool at your own risk.

6. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms of Service at any time. Your continued use of the add-on after any changes indicates your acceptance of the new terms.
