Privacy Policy for the IRIS Chrome Extension

Last Updated: July 18, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how the IRIS Chrome Extension ("IRIS," "we," "our," or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our AI-powered writing tutor beside Google Docs. The extension is intended for students enrolled in IRIS classes.

2. What Data We Collect

2.1 Account and authentication

  • Your Google account email address (to identify you and link you to your class and assignment)
  • Short-lived Google OAuth access tokens used to authenticate API requests to our backend

2.2 Document and tutoring data

  • The Google Doc ID of the document you have open when using IRIS
  • Document text and anchored passages needed to show feedback and highlight related content
  • Feedback threads, student replies, mastery indicators, help requests, and optional ratings you submit in the side panel

Scope limitation: The extension is designed for IRIS assignment documents. We do not use the extension to browse your Drive or access unrelated files.

3. Chrome Permissions

The extension requests these Chrome permissions:

  • identity — sign in with your Google account
  • sidePanel — show the IRIS tutor beside your Doc
  • storage — remember draft replies and local preferences
  • tabs — detect the active Google Doc so we can load the correct feedback
  • Host access to docs.google.com — operate in Google Docs
  • Host access to iris-tutor.com — call the IRIS backend APIs

Google OAuth scopes used: userinfo.email and documents (to read and highlight content in the open Doc as needed for tutoring).

4. How We Use Your Data

  • Authenticate you and confirm document access
  • Load and display instructor-published IRIS feedback threads
  • Send your replies to our backend and generate AI tutor responses where enabled
  • Highlight anchored passages in your document
  • Support instructor workflows such as help requests and assignment locks

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use extension data for advertising.

5. Where Data Is Processed

Extension API requests are sent to our backend at https://iris-tutor.com. AI tutoring features may process relevant text with Google Gemini. Google provides authentication and Docs APIs under Google's own terms and privacy policy.

OAuth tokens are transmitted over HTTPS, validated on each request, and are not permanently stored by the extension package.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

Feedback and tutoring records associated with your IRIS class are retained as part of the IRIS instructional product used by your school or instructor. Local draft replies may be stored in Chrome storage on your device until cleared.

To request deletion or ask questions about your data, contact us at the email below. Instructors or schools may also manage class data through the IRIS Admin Console.

7. Children and Students

IRIS is an educational product used in classroom contexts. If you are a student, your use is typically under your instructor or institution's direction. Contact your instructor or us if you have privacy questions about classroom use.

8. Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page will change when we do. Continued use of the extension after updates constitutes acceptance of the revised policy where permitted by law.
