Privacy Policy for the Rescribe Chrome Extension

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how the Rescribe Chrome Extension ("Rescribe," "we," "our," or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our writing feedback tool beside Google Docs. Rescribe provides self-serve content and language guidance sessions (separate from the IRIS class-enrollment product).

2. What Data We Collect

2.1 Account and authentication

  • Your Google account email address
  • Short-lived Google OAuth access tokens used to authenticate API requests to our backend

2.2 Document and session data

  • The Google Doc ID of the document you have open when using Rescribe
  • Document text and anchored passages needed for guidance and highlighting
  • Session context you provide (assignment prompt, rubric, notes)
  • Guidance threads, your replies, revision checks, practice-test responses, and optional transcript exports/emails you request

2.3 Microphone and dictation (optional)

If you use dictation, Rescribe may request microphone access via the browser (getUserMedia) and Chrome's speech recognition APIs. Speech recognition may be processed by Google's speech services according to Google's terms. Rescribe does not permanently store raw audio recordings on our servers; transcribed text may become part of your reply content and session records if you submit it.

Dictation is optional. You can type replies instead.

3. Chrome Permissions

  • identity — sign in with your Google account
  • sidePanel — show Rescribe beside Google Docs
  • storage — remember preferences on your device
  • tabs — detect the active Google Doc so we can load the correct session
  • Host access to docs.google.com — operate in Google Docs
  • Host access to iris-tutor.com / www.iris-tutor.com — call Rescribe backend APIs

Google OAuth scopes used: userinfo.email and documents.

4. How We Use Your Data

  • Authenticate you and authorize document-related actions
  • Generate content and language guidance with AI (Google Gemini)
  • Support replies, revision checks, practice tests, and transcript export/email when you request them
  • Highlight anchored passages in your document

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use extension data for advertising.

5. Where Data Is Processed

Extension API requests are sent to our backend at https://www.iris-tutor.com. AI features may process relevant text with Google Gemini. Google provides authentication, Docs APIs, and (when you use dictation) speech services under Google's own terms and privacy policy.

6. Retention and Deletion

Session and guidance records are retained as part of the Rescribe product. You may delete session comments from the extension UI where available. Contact us to request deletion of account-linked data.
